Jack's Bread is shutting down this October, and it likely won't restart until 2027—if it restarts at all.
So, why is this happening?
My family and I are taking an extended holiday this October (three weeks campervanning around Northern Spain ☀). Initially, the plan was simply to shut down for the month and restart in November.
However, reflecting on the business—especially in light of welcoming our first baby last February—it has become increasingly clear that baking from home is no longer viable (even with a VERY understanding partner, she told me to add!).
Baking just two days a week still requires four days of (usually chaotic) work, where the entire house ends up liberally dusted with flour while I race to make bread between childcare and other obligations.
Having more space would make a big difference, but converting our garage into a dedicated bakery is hard to get off the ground with a baby around! The only way I'll find the time to take the bakery to its next phase is to actually stop baking for a while.
That said, this isn't a promise that the bakery will restart. There are several competing forces in my life right now beyond childcare—including home renovations and opportunities in the AI gold rush (which would make me approximately 30 times more money than baking!).
At the same time, I genuinely love baking quality bread and pastries for my neighbours and local community. It makes our village better and a lot more fun, right?
I want to experiment with a few ideas before I give up the bakery for good, and I'll explain those in a blog post later this month. So, watch this space!
Finally, I want to thank all my supporters, especially my subscribers—some of whom have been with us for almost an entire year! That’s a serious commitment, and I think it shows just how "hungry" people are for quality local food.
As they say in Spain:
¡Hasta la vista!
